First, this is a book primarily for pastors who give messages at church. I'm not a pastor, and I don't give messages at church. So why did I read this book?Because I'm a good engineer, but not always a good communicator. I know what I want to have done, and how I want to have it done, but have problems passing on my passion for a project, a process, or a method, to others. And I figured maybe this book would have something good to say.Well, starting in chapter 1, Andy begins telling a 'parable' about a pastor and a trucker, and how the trucker taught the pastor how to communicate better. And to be honest, it was a good parable. Which continued for ten chapters.I enjoyed the parable, and after having read the parable, the rest of the book made sense. Andy discusses the message, the thinking behind a message, the presentation, the application, and a number of other things that will help craft a good message. He doesn't leave the Holy Spirit's role out of the message, but does emphasize the role of the pastor. Both are required, and I guess he figured the Holy Spirit didn't need any advice. So will it help me at work? Not sure, but I think it will. I will think now more in terms of 'Why do they need to know this? Why should they care? What do I really want them to do?' Those are all basic questions, but I can get buried in the theories of engineering, and forget about how others are processing the info.I read it in about a day (Sunday afternoon, and Monday after work), so it's not a monumentally long book. But it is a good read. Especially the parable.
Many of you probably know already that Andy Stanley has jumped the shark. Prefers archeology over the authority of scripture, alleges the bible was written way after first century, and now says we should divorce the New and Old Testament from each other.Well I will try to be honest. There are good tips for how to give a speech and sermon - but it is only from a secular standpoint in value. I felt like I read a corny fake story about a truck driver and then the book that Joel Osteen must have read before doing his thing...Some usable ideas for organizing and teaching? Yeah, sure. Nothing ground breaking. But you can count the bible verses on your hand practically and it is all focused on "changing lives" "Better self" type thinking. If you want the story of the son of a preacher who talks about a lot of "big time" people he met only because of his dad, and who is so man centered and focused he barely mentions the gospel or the power of Jesus and His Word at all this book might be for you. This is probably the worst book I have read in a while.Side note - this is a great book to read if you want to understand why the thinking of the modern church is becoming so warped.
I purchased this book this morning and just finished it. It's an easy to follow, very informative, both challenging and affirming. There were several points that the author makes that affirmed what I'm already doing in my preaching and presentations. But there were also several areas where the text challenged me and my approach to speaking. What I've learned from this text will inform my future process for preparing and presenting a message in the Word or a presentation of my ministry.A note for potential readers: While this book is clearly intended for those who preach, it is also quite effective for those who are called on to give presentations that are not sermons. The "Me We God You We" formula is appropriate for any public speaking situation.
Communicating for Change is an easy read. Mine was delivered about 9:30 or so on a Thursday morning, I was done by 6:00pm that afternoon (and I had some interruptions in the middle). However don't let the size fool you, the principles are thought provoking and powerful when applied.I'll admit, I reworked my sermon for that following Sunday using the methodology he lays out in the book, and I was impressed. I was impressed at how people reacted to the sermon (which I shouldn't have been when you consider how much time this method applies to connecting to the audience. I was also very impressed with how easy it was to follow the flow of the "road map" he suggests.I will say this, for me many of the principles were things I was already trying to do (at least from time to time when I would think about it). What this book did for me was give me a good framework to hang my hat on. If your current speaking style is not "conversational" you might feel like a fish out of water right at first, but I suggest you give it a try. You might surprise yourself and your audience. Some have suggested that to follow the principles lined out in this book is simply to try to imitate Andy Stanley's style. I think they are wrong. Methodology and style are two different things. If anything following (or adapting) this methodology allows for your own personality to come out even more, helping to make you more relatable to your audience and more genuine in your messages. Also don't think that preaching a "one point sermon" somehow means there is less content and more fluff. In fact the opposite is true. Preaching a one point sermon actually requires more study time and the willingness to cut the fluff and filler.Anyway, a very good book from which I think any communicator could take away some beneficial principles.
