A fantastic book. It is educational, enlightening and a bit intense at times. I had the utmost pleasure of meeting Mr. Crossfield several years before his death. To say I was awestruck is an understatement. Through a friend I was introduced to Mr. Crossfield inside the terminal building of our local airport. Eighty plus years young and still flying his Cessna 210, coming in to visit an old friend. Reading this book solidified my impression of “The Rocket Man”. Of course it is now 2018 and virtually everything he strived for and dreamt of in this book has come to fruition. Scott Crossfield died one night in his beloved Cessna while navigating through a line of thunderstorms over North Georgia. Upon hearing the news, my first thought, “he died with his boots on”. Rest In Peace “Rocket Man”.

Exciting read. I always enjoy true stories, and the one had real drama. Always Another Dawn : The Story of a Rocket Test Pilotby Albert Scott Crossfield and Clay Blair, bring the early days of the space age, with test flights - courage and daring. Highly recommended.

I live a few miles from Edwards AFB and was around during these exciting days. My only problems are that, like many older books apparently copied, there are some typos including the total absence of possessive apostrophes. Also, a brief update on what has happened since Crossfield's experience would be helpful.None of this takes anything away from a fascinating look into the human side of the continuing story of flight test in California's Aerospace Valley. This is the real thing and it is still happening at Edwards and the Mojave Air & Spaceport!

I was a Navy test pilot -- but I never flew a rocket-powered airplane. In this book, Crossfield put me in one! The endless checklists, swithology, instrumentation, delays ... they all came back on steroids! Our work was child's play compared to the life and (sudden) death routine of legends like Crossfield. He laid it on the line every day, and was to complete more than 100 flights in rocket planes during his heyday. Albert Scott Crossfield died in an airplane crash in 2006 at age 84 -- flying his own Cessna. Looking back, I think he would say that that would be about right with him.I'm not sure that this is a book for everybody; except, perhaps, for the message of the rewards of exhaustive work and determination. Add leadership and visionary to that list. This IS a book for the aviation enthusiast; design, structure, test and evaluation. Crossfield puts you in the X-15 demonstration program step by step; flight by flight. As an experienced test pilot, I found it riveting and instructive.

I really liked this book. For some perspective, I've long been interested in the field of flight test, and of the X-15. The book is autobiographical in nature, and covers Scott Crossfield's life, focusing upon his experiences as an aviation engineer and test pilot, particularly with the X-15.The book was well written and kept my interest throughout. The only snivel I have is that the story of the X-15 was really just getting started under Crossfield's time as an engineer and test pilot. I know this was intended to be his story, and not the story of the X-15, but I would have liked to had a short chapter about the rest of the history of the X-15. There is probably another book out there which I need to find and purchase. Oveall, this was an excellent book and I'm happy I read it.

I've been looking for this book for 15 years and just by chance was able to find it on Amazon.com. Scott Crossfield does a great job illustrating his flight test experience and explains in detail his contributions to flight test in the 1940's, 50's and 60's. He was taken from us just a few years ago, but his legacy lives in. I was also surprised by his candor when it came to mistakes he made in flight test (The Hanger Wall versus the Sonic Wall), but it is such an engaging story. Always Another Dawn was published in the early 1960's before NASA & the Mercury, Gemini & Apollo programs really got off the ground. But this story is a great foundation upon which those programs were built. I'd highly recommend this book for any aviation enthusiasts interested in the early days of rocket pilots and of the NACA.

The book was written in 1960. It provides real insights into how the world of aviation changed from what existed at the end of WWII to the dawn of the space age. Technology was advanced by men of vision and courage willing to take risks to push the edges of traditional technology. Now technology is advanced by securing political support for a concept and finding the capital funding all the while being scrutinized by a phalanx of lawyers. (with Elon Musk being very much a throwback to the days of idea men willing to risk their lives, their capital and their reputations to make advances in technology). How the world of the test pilot has changed !)

I liked the book and it provided me with highly interesting information on this era of flight research. Reasons, including a bit of the politics for what was done then. And with good history of the X-15 for which he was the developmental test pilot. To me he was a pilot-engineer along the lines of Neil Armstrong. Not a lot of fluff or family material ; just direct hard-core history of what happened. I will never sweat a dead stick landing in any modern aircraft after reading this material. He seemed to be the master of dead stick spot landings no matter what the approach speed or handling issues.,
