I want to thank Ms. Russell for sharing her family stories, her Quaker experiences, and her beautiful surroundings in Gila Valley, New Mexico. When I left the priesthood and the Church about 1969 (with the help of LSD), I determined that the earth was my real home.I think the doctrine of God creating the world from nothing was a big mistake. It separated God from nature. The command to “multiply and subdue†the earth also alienated humans from nature rather than being part of it.Although the Church retained the doctrine of God’s immanence, God in things, “panentheism,†it conflicted with the idea of “getting to heaven.â€Losing the sacredness of nature has been catastrophic. There has been much new interest in pantheism besides New Age and eastern religions.Pantheism has a formidable tradition, including Anaximander, Heraclitus, Zeno and the Stoics, Marcus Aurelus, and my Dominican friar heros, Giordano Bruno, and Meister Eckhart.I loved Standing in the Light: My Life as a Pantheist, by nature writer Sharman Apt Russell. She writes, “We walk in the Mind and Body of God.†She has good insights on what it means to be part of nature—which is anything but “the peaceable kingdom!â€Learning to live as part of nature is the challenge that this book addresses.
"I believe, without a doubt, in an interconnected universe", says Russell. "Any faith I have in a sacred interconnected universe is hard-won". So we are blessed with this book. As Russell states in the introduction, "this overview is personal, not definitive". What this means for the reader is that he or she will be taking a tour with the author through southwestern New Mexico as she bands birds and participates in Quaker meetings; things that, for her, facilitate her religious experience. This kind of practice obviously isn't for everybody but the reader can surely get an idea of how to apply their own spirituality to daily living. As all of this is happening, Russell invokes the ghosts of the past; flashbacks to various points in the history of pantheistic thought bring these philosophers and spiritualists of old back to life. Russell explores their lives and thoughts in ways that relate to her so any in depth analyses will have to be sought elsewhere. Those looking for a more philosophical examination of Pantheism should pick up a copy of Michael P. Levine's "Pantheism: a non-theistic concept of deity".
There's much to like about this book. The author has a quick, alert writing style that makes a point with both grace and frankness; she can flat out turn a phrase. And I really like how all the keywords/phrases in each chapter are summarized at the beginning of the chapter; it means I don't have to mark the book up to go back and find something I read. I did mark page 213 where she revealed that religious belief is likely a function of evolution. That is just too delicious a premise and will prompt me to read her cited sources. I plan to read this book again, much as I have done with my Edward Abby and Craig Childs books.
As a Quaker seminarian and fellow New Mexican, I'm more than a little partisan to Russell's latest book, but I'd recommend her beautiful lively writing to all who sense something delightful and disturbing in their experience of nature and spirit.Standing in the Light: My Life as a Pantheist is a walking meditation, faithful in its survey of pantheistic thought, yet grounded in its particular place and time. The book begins not with a creed, but with a map of the Nature Conservancy's Gila River Farm in southern New Mexico, where the author lives in a "little yellow house" not far from one of the few healthy rivers remaining in the American Southwest. Her stories of Spinoza, Whitman, Quakers, and Hindus are interlinked by a refrain that counts blackbirds, flycatchers, grosbeaks, and wrens during bird banding season. Greek philosophers are accompanied by a chorus of sandhill cranes. Roman stoics and modern cell biologists find themselves at home among stories of the author's family, or the river's mosquito fish and loach minnows. "Everything is interwoven," writes the Roman ruler Marcus Aurelius, "and the web is holy.""I am in love with Marcus Aurelius," admits Russell, two thousand years later, yet she paints her portrait of his brutal time and life with the same faithful linguistic brush, as she paints scenes of Coots pecking their baby nestlings to death. Russell has not written a sentimental book. Those looking for an idealized naturalism will not find easy comfort.Yet the view from Russell's porch remains reverent. "Standing in the Light" is a Quaker phrase that captures both the immediacy of religious experience and the difficulty of its explication. The inbreak of the divine is heralded by the ordinary - by a sidewalk and porch step, pine tree and electric wires, by the gurgling call of a raven. By walking the landscape, Russell is able to walk through thousands of years of human life, pondering the relation of the natural and the divine. One doesn't so much learn history or philosophy in this book as breathe it, smell it in damp earth after desert rain, or watch it form and shift like clouds in the New Mexico sky."In my case, pantheism is a word whose back I ride like a man on a horse trying to get somewhere," writes Russell, "Or maybe a word more like a house, a place of shelter when it is cold and rainy, a house with big windows and a gorgeous view."
What an incredible journey into the life of a Pantheist. And the journey is made easy by virtue of the author's beautiful writing. The book is a wonderful mix of the history of pantheism (written in a friendly, readable way) alongside rich personal anecdotes into the world of nature and relationships. Her honesty--for example, her admissions about loneliness--is refreshing. And the more honest she is, the more we, as readers, are compelled to examine our own spiritual foundation.Truly a beautiful work of a tender heart.
