After reading this book, I wasn't sure if I wanted to be scared, optimistic, proud to be an American, or if I was simply mystified by the analysis of the author.George Friedman does a tremendous job of utilizing historical data to analyze and project future global political/military/economic turns over the next 100 years. While there are some things in this book that are already dated (I believe this book was published in 2008/9); there are some projections in this one that are eerily accurate. The best part is, Mr. Friedman is able to do all of this, without taking any real political perspective. This book is not about American politics, it is very much a world view (although some may view it as a being Ameri-centric). Mr. Friedman explains why the United States is still the most critical player on the planet Earth (hint - it has a lot to do with our navy & having warm weather ports on 2 of the world's largest oceans).Having studied Political Science in college, and having relied on Stratfor.com for writing papers.....I have learned to never underestimate the genius that is George Friedman. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in geo-politics or enjoys to read political type novels (this book is NOT a novel).
Strap in while Mr Friedman takes you on a terrifying and fantastic journey into the geopolitical landscape of the next one hundred years.I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Mr Friedmans style of writing and pace make this a page turner. I can't imagine some of his predictions like war again with Japan however he makes compelling arguments for each scenario. Two thumbs up.
One of the top interesting books I had read in quite a while,Very engaging and immersive read that keeps you thinking about the content even when you are not reading. The writer uses a very clear language (English is a 2nd language for me). and he expresses his thoughts and ways of thinking and elicitation clearly.Overall honest elicitation, opinions and conclusions (but not necessarily entirely true), that is enriching for any strategic thinker/planner, also had some entertaining quite realist and plausible fiction parts.
Interesting read for sure, obviously a predictive book- much like the weather man, it doesn't have to be right. The author does however touch on how and why the predictions have merit, and they are pretty persuasive. Of course, take with a grain of salt. Some of the claims are so outlandish and so volatile that any number of dozens of variables could lead to dozens more potential outcomes.
Loved every line of it even if in some places the thoughts were somewhat repetitive. 40 years ago I left Soviet Union, today I observe Putin's actions with complete understanding of his desire to recreate the Mother Russia. The author was very perceptive in describing Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia in terms of their geopolitical desires and tenacity ( or lack thereof). I can very well see his projection of technology into the future as well as tech advances due to war and even the affects of such advances on the social fabric of the societies. Western population decline and the changes this will bring to the western world. I was most amazed with the parallels the author draws between US and a teenage behavior as well as Europe and an elder tired man. That alone brings every move US makes in global politics to light! It is really Empowering to know that the U.S. Is still on the rise while behaving just like a indestructible teenager. Understanding the 50 year American cycles was also so very helpful especially to come to terms that the Presidents cannot single handily change was had been set up on the global stage, so no need to panic every time a President you did not vote for gets elected... What a relief! Lol!
I always resist making final judgments on events in the broader world (think SYRIA and CRIMEA recently) until AFTER I have gone to my inbox and read George Friedman's thoughts. He isn't always dead on, but he is so dead on usually that you just have to factor in his writing. An unabashed geopolitical thinker, his wisdom on things EU in particular is unparalleled. This is the book you should take on that overseas flight, or from NYC to LA, and then keep on your desk for ready review. Friedman impacts thinking on diplomatic and macro military strategy in major ways. If you make decisions and don't consider his views, you should change. Might not change the decisions but his think really should be considered.
Entertaining, eye-opening, thought-provoking, this book zooms out from our daily political obsessions to take a long (very long) view of history past, present, and future. The author, with courage but also the appropriate dose of humility, takes us on a tour of the next several decades which, if he is even close to the mark, will see some startling geopolitical developments. In some ways his methodology - which he discloses fully and clearly - is even more interesting than his results. Well worth a look for anyone interested in international politics and the fate of the world.
I'm reading this book a second time, now five years after its publication, and find today's headlines remarkably on target to Friedman's foretelling. I will keep it around and read it again in a couple of years to see what has happened. I have given it to my children who will likely live during the major crises outlined and want them to at least be psychologically prepared for what may come. My grandchildren even more so.The macro events of this book makes the current squabbles of today's political players seem insignificant, but the challenges before us are very real.My only criticism or observation is the conspicuous absence of any involvement of Canada, Australia, or most of the Southern Hemisphere in the events described in the 21st century.
Too USA Centric -completely ignored the entire continent of Africa, excepting Egypt. Ignored the opportunity for Russia to extend their reach via the Arctic, through Canada....and in fact, despite that strategic position, left Canada off the global map entirely. waste of time
