From the Back Cover
The rapid development in various fields of Digital Audio Effects, or DAFX, has led to new algorithms and this second edition of the popular book, DAFX: Digital Audio Effects has been updated throughout to reflect progress in the field. It maintains a unique approach to DAFX with a lecture-style introduction into the basics of effect processing. Each effect description begins with the presentation of the physical and acoustical phenomena, an explanation of the signal processing techniques to achieve the effect, followed by a discussion of musical applications and the control of effect parameters. Topics covered include: filters and delays, modulators and demodulators, nonlinear processing, spatial effects, time-segment processing, time-frequency processing, source-filter processing, spectral processing, time and frequency warping musical signals. Updates to the second edition include: • Three completely new chapters devoted to the major research areas of: Virtual Analog Effects, Automatic Mixing and Sound Source Separation, authored by leading researchers in the field . • Improved presentation of the basic concepts and explanation of the related technology. • Extended coverage of the MATLABTM scripts which demonstrate the implementation of the basic concepts into software programs. • Companion website (www.dafx.de) which serves as the download source for MATLABTM scripts, will be updated to reflect the new material in the book. Discussing DAFX from both an introductory and advanced level, the book systematically introduces the reader to digital signal processing concepts, how they can be applied to sound and their use in musical effects. This makes the book suitable for a range of professionals including those working in audio engineering, as well as researchers and engineers involved in the area of digital signal processing along with students on multimedia related courses.

3.5 stars...I bought it because it was on sale, and I had some idea of what it contained having used the first edition roughly 8 years ago in school. Had I paid full price, I probably would have put the rating a little lower...THE PLUS SIDE :Good compendium of digital audio processing methods for audio.Well written, organized, and covers a lot of ground.Diagrams are pretty clear, text is pretty clear.THE DOWN SIDE :While the math is kept relatively light, which is nice compared to something like Miller Puckette or J.O.Smith, who write great but very technical explanations of things seeped in formulas - it's still a book by academics, for academic environments :-- MATLAB : the ultimate vestigial organ in the audio industry. Only big companies use MATLAB and smaller ones using it are probably pirating an EDU license. I suppose you could use Octave, but it's just an out of touch aspect of this book.. Nobody writes real time applications in MATLAB - a lot of audio effects are kind of worthless if you can't implement them in real-time. Just saying...-- Switch the MATLAB code to psuedo code, or stuff people actually use for real time like C/C++ or maybe python, or just don't publish it all - if you don't know the MATLAB syntax or function calls, many of the code examples are basically worthless-- Some of the supplementary materials pointed to, well if you aren't a student or a professor, you won't be able to access them without being a member of the respective organization that published them. It's really annoying to be told "further details are outlined in [refXX]" and I can't access refxx because I don't have license/membership, etc...I used the first edition in grad school, where my professors wasted time showing us how to build effects in MATLAB (I can safely say, no one ever used MATLAB again after grad school) and the code was not without some grievous errors. Since I no longer have MATLAB I can't speak on it, but I'd be careful on relying on the examples to work out of the box.If you're interested in real-time : The Will Pirkle books are a better option, and if you need the C component basics, Boulanger's The Audio Programming Book. If you want a survey of effects and a high level explanation of their DSP implementation, this is a good resource.
As with digital editions of many books, the kindle edition of this book is not well formatted. Even worse, the formulae are not correctly transcribed, including inline formulae in the text, making reading it occasionally torturous and tiresome. If you actually need to use any of the equations in this book, you will, undoubtedly, struggle with deciphering an "o" from a lower-case sigma or other such minutia. You may end up guessing and guessing until the formula makes sense. In my opinion, such errors are unacceptable in digital or print at any price, and certainly not at a $70+ text-book price.Other problems include:- Organization is sometimes a problem. Different chapters sometimes overlap more than they should, and it's not clear where various things belog, despite spending an inordinate amount of time trying to classify effects in Chapter 1. eg the chapter on virtual analog effects inexplicably covers phasing and wah-wah (which both belong much more naturally in the chapter on filtering), as well as a few misc analog-emulating filters which do belong. You might expect this to be the chapter that covers tube emulation, since that is practically the definition of "virtual analog effects" these days, but that's actually in the non-linear processing chapter. Prepare to bookmark!- Some of the sections are better than others, and some are relevant to everyday use while others more esoteric -- it's a little unclear to me how they decided to include what. (eg, Why was there no mention of dither except in the glossary? There may well be good reason for this, but it was unclear to me. It also contains a section on analog circuit emulation that explains something called Wave Digital Filter theory. I skimmed this section. It appears to be interesting, but I don't think the book gives enough information for you to put this theory to use without resorting to external references, so it's not clear to me why it's included at all. Again, I only skimmed the section, so I could be wrong.)- Oddly, I couldn't find any reference whatsoever to the location of the source code online anywhere in the book. Of course it's easy to find ([...]) but this kind of thing is, well, sloppy. With all that said, I can say I've found a fair bit of useful stuff in the book, and I do this sort of thing for a living, so that should make it clear that there's a ton of good material here, and most of it is explained in very clear language. Some chapters, like the one on automatic mixing, are written in extremely clear, refreshing and intuitive language. All in all, some of this is an introductory book, some of this is a cookbook of practical code, and some of this is a book on basic theory. It doesn't really know what it wants to be. It's more of a hodge-podge of information about DA-FX than anything else. If you already know the basics, this will extend your knowledge quite nicely. If not, you might still learn a thing or two, but this is probably not the best starting point.
This is a good starting point for research on several areas in audio processing. It has some errors in the Matlab code that comes with it and isn't always correct when you get down to the details but it gives a useful overview and good list of references for each topic that will point you in the right direction.
very good
excellent explanation of all topics those can be used in audio engineering field especially for guitarists and professional audio engineers
Great book, and definitely goes through the mathematics and logics of creating digital audio effects. The one issue is the code they use as an example. All of it is extremely slow, and some code do not run properly. Overall a good book though.
