Not sure why Clines did it, but I'm pleased that he undertook the task of re-imagining the classic tale of Robinson Crusoe and adding a big dollop of H.P. Lovecraft to Defoe's original narrative. If you've ever read Defoe's version, you'll recall a number of themes including adventure, racial politics, religion, colonialism, free will and fate. Readers of the time would likely identify with many of his social positions and perhaps not even recognize the oft times disagreeable aspects of what Crusoe believes and does. Clines grapples with those themes and incorporates them into a more palatable mélange by changing the race of the island inhabitants/visitors into sub-human creatures, not necessarily of this Earth. Religions clash to a degree but this time, the aboriginal's gods are living, breathing monsters and not invisible entities as in the original version. The adventure story remains relatively intact (with clashes with the Lovecraftian gods being one exception) from Defoe's telling which still delights even modern readers. It was fun to compare Cline's story to Defoe's to see where changes were made and the weird elements added. In some respects, this is a scholarly approach to make a classic a lot more fun to read. Please note, Clines maintains Defoe's story telling style that is a bit rough to plow through, but in the end, a good time.

I'm almost always a fan of the retelling of classic stories with an unusual twist. Be it Pride, Prejudice and Zombies or Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century (90's cartoon). I greatly appreciate when an author is able to breathe new life into a classic story. To be honest, I only ever read the Great Illustrated Classics version of Robinson Crusoe. As a result, I may have missed some details of the original book that would have made it a lot less boring. To me it was a survival story without a lot of survival but with a lot of luck. That's what I was looking forward to this retelling. Crusoe as a werewolf gives his survival more credibility. It's easier for me to believe that a werewolf could survive almost 30 years on this island as opposed to a regular mortal man.The inclusion of some Lovecraft elements, predominantly Cthulu, also gave the story a bit more flavor and even some legitimately scary scenes. It also helped to explain why the natives on nearby islands found this particular island to be sacred ground for their church, rather than another island to live on. Clines' inclusion of supernatural elements actually does help the overall story to make more sense than the version of the original that I had read.Of course, for me, there were still some boring parts. This retelling still stays fairly true to the original, so it's not surprising that there were times when Crusoe's story seemed mundane. But, if you enjoy a classic with a twist, or supernatural elements as commonplace, I definitely recommend The Eerie Adventures of the Lycanthrope Robinson Crusoe. I happily give 4 out of 5.

Great book, Clines changed a great many of the subplots of the original but replaced them with more action and adventures, the werewolf thing totally works out and is wonderfully integrated. He's kinda happy being on the island alone for a while with no one to hurt when he changes. Friday is no longer black, but now is a "deep-one" or like a fish-man kinda thing, and I loved it, he has no problem calling Crusoe "Master" and is quite content with worshiping both the christian god and "Kathooloo," and Crusoe just accepts it and they become good friends, ending is also excellent, sad in some respects, but leaves enough to be imagined. I really loved the one sentence reference to THE HOUNDS OF TINDALOS in which Friday's father describes cannibals screaming "tyndlo."Here's what i didn't like. First, this book had no advertisement at all, never saw it in any book store ever (and I looked very hard). Second, the cover in print is so very dark and grayed out compared to the image here, not to judge a book by its cover, but when you can barely make out the title of the book because of the lack of contrast between super dark blue and dull black, it may come across as a turn off, also if it was on a shelf, many people would just look past it as a blurry background book on their way towards a book who's cover grabs you by the eye with great contrast and color. Third, (this isn't a big deal) Clines seemed a little reserved on hitting the 'enter' button, I understand that was how the original was written, but it is no longer the original, and this book was a VERY SLOW READ,I wouldn't mind an extra 20 pages if it took less time to conquer a page, that is typically a trait of bestsellers according to Dean Koontz and it makes sense. All in all i would blame Permuted Press for this books lack of sales and popularity, i will say that besides the cover, the ink on the pages slightly shimmers and i like it and they have some great books, but they should really advertise more if they aren't going for the stores.

I wasn't sure about this at first, but I took a chance and I am glad I did! as the Title of the book says, what if Robin Crusoe was a wereWolf? better yet, what if the Island he was on was used as a place of worship by the followers of Cthulu? I hope this is the begining of a series. I have a feeling that it will, that this will end up a story of how the citizens of H. P. Lovecraft's Innsmouth ended up in new england. as the title says, this story is about a character that most of us know (or thought we did) but with a twist. once we accept the first twist, the author slowly slips the Idea of a lycanthropic Crusoe in a lovecraftian universe. and as the story goes on, he lays the trail for further stories in this same universe. if you are into the Cthulu mythology, you will enjoy this very much. If you have never heard of H. P. Lovecraft or Cthulu, this story introduces the concepts a bit at a time so that you do not have to be well versed in those stories to understand what is going on. be warned, if you dont know Cthulu before reading this book, you will want to after you do.
