Sam KeanThe Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the ElementsAn overview of all elements, how they were discovered, as well as the people who discovered them, and overview of the periodic table and stories including different elements, such as Mark Twain’s Sold to SatanSam Kean is currently a writer in Washington D.C and has written 3 books regarding scientific discoveriesI have not enjoyed this book very much although I see the appeal to chemists and non-chemists as well. This book is frankly not my type of reading material but I appreciate the way Kean blends chemistry with real life examples and how they relate.I believe the author wrote this book to relate chemistry to real life and inform people of the stories behind the elements because those are worth knowing and are also very interesting. I also believe Kean wrote this for non-chemists because he used language many can understand, not just chemists and it is relatable.I believe the point of the review is to discover nuances and information we didn’t notice or didn’t have access to when reading. In addition, it will help us apply chemistry to real life, instead of just a classroom.Summary of ContentKean does a good job defining and giving examples of how the uses of elements have changed in different periods of time. An example of this is how Kean mentions that uses of elements often change in times of war, when the use goes from everyday means/experiments to making a massive bomb. Kean also mentions how even certain chemists steal other’s work and in the past were extremely selfish. A female chemist is mentioned and Kean explains how she was not allowed to be a professor because of her sex. He also tells us how two chemists received a shared Nobel Prize even though one chemists was just associating his name even though he contribute almost nothing. Overall, Kean does a great job relating chemistry to real events, often thought to have nothing to do with chemistry, which makes it easier for people with no chemistry backgrounds to relate and understand how important chemistry in the real world.

The name of this book is The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements, by Sam Kean. The main themes of this book are curiosity, exploration, and chemistry. One relevant detail about Sam Kean is that he lives in Washington DC and continues to write books about his favorite subject, science. I am writing this book review because my teacher has assigned it to me as a homework task. I believe that Sam Kean wrote this book because he wanted to show the history of the world from the periodic table. This book was okay because it had a lot of history information about the elements, but it dragged the story along too much. The book The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements, by Sam Kean is about history of the world from the periodic table. You see the story from the perspective of the periodic table of elements. Sam Kean talks about every single element on the table in the book. He also talks about different properties and how people have dealt with these element. He gives a large range of information, starting with the discovery and ending with the science of bubbles in beer. This book was good in the areas of the amount of history given. For example, in the beginning of chapters Kean starts the topic with history from centuries ago. As the chapter progresses, he ends with modern day facts about the element or topic he was discussing. Like I said, Kean ends all his chapters with history to this day. It could be about the element, or bubbles, or anything science related. The bad part about this book the that some of the chapters dragged along too much in the content of the story. They quality was very good, but the quantity was exceeding my limits. Some of the longer chapters were over twenty pages long. I believe that the pages should be under twenty pages because it can tire the reader. Also, some of the chapters add too much information. This book was okay because it had a lot of history information about the elements, but it dragged the story along too much. Even though the book had too much to say at some points, it scored really high for me in the information department. When I read books, I like it when the book is filled with fun facts to learn, but with a less amount of text. The book should be filled with as much quality that you are able to put in, but the quantity should be less. I like to live by quantity versus quality. I would give this book a six out of ten.
